Conservatism 101: Some Differences between Conservatives and Liberals Including Self-Reliance vs Government Dependency

This is the first in a series of articles on randomly selected topics or ideas that differentiate conservatives from liberals which I consider very appropriate during election year primary campaigns. The objective of all primary campaigns for conservative republicans at the present time should be to educate the public on conservatism and why liberalism has been a disaster for our country. Candidates these day seem to opt for the politics of personal destruction over a strategy of working together for a common goal of exposing the weaknesses of the ideology of the opposition candidate. Following an informative campaign, it would then be up to the voters to decide which candidate has been the most effective communicator for the cause. Because the candidates for the most part have chosen the low road this year by breaking Ronald Reagan's 11th commandment (never say anything negative about another Republican), I feel obligated to share my two cents worth.

Today I’d like to discuss some basic differences between conservatives and liberals and the present road the country is on under this administration, a road that leads to bankruptcy, loan defaults, interference from hostile governments, continued decreases in credit ratings, depletion of pension funds and life savings, riots in the streets, martial law, totaltarianism, transition to a worthless banana republic headed by a worthless tin pot dictator, and overall misery under the seudonyms of "fairness" and "equality". And all of this will be the end result from implementing policies like government healthcare based on the wonderful European model that they themselves now despise and consider a complete failure.

But before I get to that please open your copy of Conservatism 101 to page 1 and lets begin slowly (as liberals have a difficult time with this page) The conservative looks at someone and says you can make it. I want you to make it, but you’ll have to do the work. You’ll have to figure out what your passions are and what you really love doing. After that you’ll be on your own, but please understand that I want you to succeed, and will help you anyway that I can. But whether you succeed or fail is completely up to you. Keep trying and remember, never give up, as Sir Winston Churchill was fond of saying in his speeches to graduating classes of various sorts.

I’ll work towards insisting that enough tax dollars are collected to support necessary services we all need i.e. limited government but no more than necessary and I'll work towards insisting that the government impose as few regulations as possible on small businesses to help small business entrepreneurs succeed.
When you succeed as an entrepreneur, your revenue will increase as long as we can refrain from raising tax rates (an always present danger when Democrats are in power). The increased revenue from a growing economy is always the most effective way of paying down the defecit as we saw during the Clinton administration. President Clinton benefited from a robust high tech sector for a while despite his best efforts to destroy growth by increasing taxes.

The less spending the government does, the more of your own money (property) you’ll be able to keep. You’ll then be free to invest that money towards the expansion of your own business interests which will create job opportunities for others. If you don’t expand, invest, or hire more employees, you’ll atleast have more purchase power which is the most efficient way to re-distribute wealth.
When government redistributes wealth, it spends tax dollars without growing the economy. And it spends just as much or more even when it is taking in less revenue, which defies the most common sense business logic known to man, or families. You must not spend money you don’t have. When your needs increase, the challenge is always how to earn more and the most effective way to earn more is by working harder and becoming more self-reliant.

I have found that such common sense thinking does not impress either liberal democrats or moderate (liberal)republicans, who already believe conservatives like myself are simpletons and aren’t as enlightened as they are.

Now lets take a look at the liberal. If the conservative wants you to succeed by being self-reliant, the liberal wants you to depend on a strong government supported by tax dollars confiscated from others through the redistribution of income. A conservative instinctively finds this idea immoral and the liberal thinks it is the essence of morality. Considering that most liberals don't believe in God any more and are ignorant when it comes to understanding basic concepts from the Bible, such as thou shall not covet, I have a tendency to go with the conservative's instinct on morality, even if they haven't been to Sunday school or Church since kindergarten. That basic understanding of what God has revealed to man through his prophets, holy apostles, and the Word of God, is enough to send most Harvard graduates, like Barack Hussein Obama, into a cold sweat these days. Liberals also do not understand that the injunctions for helping the poor and encouraging charity have to do with individuals, not governments which control an evil world system that was handed over to Satan in the Garden of Eden after he tricked the first Man (Adam) into sinning. (Duh!)

He also does not have the same faith in a person’s ability to succeed that the conservative does. I’ll even go so far as to say that the liberal looks at those struggling to get by in the world and say I know you’re stupid and unable to achieve success, but don’t worry we’ll take care of you.

The message of liberty for all is meant to encourage the pursuit of happiness and enjoy the fullness of life by focusing on self-interest. This is a traditional conservative message that we haven’t heard during the present election campaign as much as we should. Even so called conservative publications have been covering the campaign like a horse race according to Rush Limbaugh. Rush was beside himself on Thursday when he came to the conclusion that some high browed conservative journalists just seem to be coming to grips with the idea that self-reliance is the way to go, for people who want to become successful. Duh....
Rush quoted an article in the National Review this week entitled: Why Conservatives Lost the Payroll Tax Cut Battle by Mario Loyola which said:

The Democrats bid to expand the entitlement state for political benefit is a mortal threat to the future of our country. But the fact that these collectivist schemes continue to play out in their favor is not the fault of conservative leaders. It is, rather, a sign that Americans have lost their way. We conservatives have to make a much more convincing case that the road to a better society lies in the direction of self-reliance and limited government, and away from the debilitating entitlement state to which the Democrats’ poisened carrots are leading us.

We conservatives have to make a much more convincing case that the road to a better society lies in the direction of self reliance", Rush repeated and then continued: “Yeah, well (sigh) “This is basic conservatism. Conservative publications are all tied up in the horse race aspects: conservatives ripping Romney to shreds or alternatively ripping Santorum to shreds or ripping Newt. Conservatives aren’t doing conservatism. This what is frustrating. Yeah, the concept of self reliance, we have to do a better job pushing self-reliance, yeah, duh! Where’s it been? We’re just now figuring this out? Are we 30 years behind what’s been going on here?

Since FDR the Democrats have been countering that, and Obama has codified the notion that self-reliance is not the ticket, self-reliance is painful, it’s failure, you’re not gonna get anywhere. The deck’s stacked against you. The future is for you to let us take care of you.

Anyway, as I was saying, the message of liberty for all became supplanted by the quest to build a sort of heaven on earth or utopia through the redistribution of income which the Catholic church since the 1930’s has considered charity. The word charity as actually used in the King James Version of the Bible is usually translated “love” in modern English versions, which stands liberalism on its ear as I implied already. The reference is meant for individuals not governments. This is not to say that charity, in the sense of helping others, especially the poor and the homeless, is not a Christian mandate. It certainly is, but the emphasis is always on individuals’s being their brother’s keeper, not the government once again (Sorry for the repetition, but liberals never get this)Mark Levin has an excellent book out entitled Ameritopia: The Unmaking of America that covers this very subject.

Most of the people who have ever lived on the planet earth have lived in repressive, controlling, societies. Americans, however, have been blessed to live in a country where they were relatively free to enjoy a fruitful existence that they created for themselves. But we do not hear talk like this as much as we use to, because it is becoming more difficult for individuals to forge ahead.
Liberals blame the rich and global co-operations instead of focusing where the blame really belongs…….on the government and an ever growing segment of the population, comfortable with dependency on government for its needs. Rush continued in his introspective examination of the National Review article which stated the problem of government dependency was complicated by the fact Americans have become addicted to services that are free by saying:

The idea that these services will be free runs against the most basic understanding of economics. It’s like the Democrats and the mainstream media think calling expanded coverage of something “free” makes it free, as they did in the so called compromise involving the Catholic Church and its health care coverage for birth control and abortion related services.

If there’s no free lunch, there are no free abortifacients either “ Yeah, were just now discovering that people actually think that free is free.

Liberalism, socialism, communism, and marxism have failed wherever they have been tried. The specific type of European style socialism that Obama is intent on implementing here after he totally destroys our economy as just compensation for what the “Great Satan” has done to the rest of the world has been a total failure in Europe.

Daniel Hannon, Minister of the European Parliament gave a very sobering speech at CPAC where he spoke of Europe as being in the midst of a long winter…”a winter of discontent”. He continued in great detail to paint a grim picture of what lies in store for us if we continue down the road to oblivion and said: “While some of us in Europe are succeeding in convincing Europeans of the mistakes we have made in pursuing socialism and are working hard to fight back against such damaging policies, we look in our rear view mirror... and see you bearing down on us with recklace abandon (or words to that effect) and there is a cliff up ahead. But there is still time for you to turn aside

He also focused on the importance of not only the up and coming presidential election as being crucial in putting on the brakes in time, but on the congressional elections as well. No matter who becomes the next president, it won't amount to a hill of beans if Harry Reid and Nancy Pelosi are running the congress. They will still have the media on their side with the ability to turn the public against those trying to save the country from the firestorm ahead.

What to do...What to do.... about the dismal state of schools in New Bedford, MA

New Bedford, MA____About 125 members of this community met last night to discuss what to do about New Bedford’s failed school system which is on the verge of being taken over by the state because of poor test scores. It seems that students can’t pass the MCAS tests and the city has been unable to submit a plan for turning dismal student performances around, that meets the state's approval. The city’s new mayor, Jon Mitchel, did what Democrat politicians do extremely well…call public meetings. There is nothing like sitting there with legs crossed appearing like you're in deep contemplative thought wrestling with a serious problem saying what to do…what to do. . Hey mayor? I was just wondering if you have any private head cracking sessions planned for the future with school officials and all those union workers on the payroll?

You know…the ones pretending to be teachers. I tell you what. I’ll see if my old 6th grade teacher, who taught at the TR Rodman School in New Bedford MA in the early 60’s is still around, although I hate to do that because she still scares me. But she sure was an effective teacher. Her students all learned something because they were required to be accountable for all the materials taught everyday. Of course she was one of those who didn’t give a hoot about a child’s self-esteem. All she cared about was teaching her students the 3 R’s. I guess there is no room for someone like that now. Obama "compromise" on religious freedom is no compromise

When I first heard that President Obama would be presenting a compromise proposal said to be respectful of religious concerns, it occurred to me that it must be getting very hot in his kitchen with one Democrat after another signaling their displeasure with the move. These included none other than Vice President Biden and recently departed Chief of Staff Bill Daly who rumor has it headed for the hills at the mere mention of trampling over the religious freedom rights of 70 million Catholics. Just when the Democrats have the Hispanic vote locked in he does what? One of the first people to react to rumors that a compromise had been reached was Radio Talk Show Host Rush Limbaugh who reminded his vast audience Friday:

Obama started this fight when he demanded that Catholic organizations provide birth control and other abortion related services. He can’t do that. It’s unconstitutional. After the predictable uproar by Church leaders, he says….Okay we’ll walk it back and we’ll make the insurance companies pay for it, as if the issue was money in the first place, which means he’s getting everything he wants! He’s getting mandated federal funding of abortion services __and in the process trampling over the constitution. The right to religious liberty in this context is unequivocal in our country. It’s in the Constitution

But wait a minute….He can’t suddenly grant a reprieve and say…Okay guys…you win…you’ve made your case…and essentially say I’ll grant you your liberty. What? He doesn’t have the authority to do that either. So now our benevolent dictator issues a proclamation under the guise of a press conference and says the matter is over. Really? Will employees of Catholic Institutions be able to get services the Church forbids under the policy of the Insurance Company that provides the coverage? The answer is yes. So what has changed, you ask? Nothing, in reality. Obama got what he wanted but now the Insurance Company will bear the cost. Really?
Do you really think the Insurance company will bear the burden of the costs without passing it on to the end users? Of course not, that is silly. The ignorance of how business works in this administration is often mind-boggling and embarrassing.
Somebody is going to pay. And somebody is going to provide the services. And so far Obama has refused to answer any questions about this matter.
I’m sure it’s just an oversight. NOT!
If anything good came of this obvious abuse of power and intrusion into the policies of religious institutions and private businesses, it is that it has given the republican presidential candidates a much larger issue to latch onto, and that is ___a real glimpse of life under OBamaCare. Lets hope and pray that one of the candidates comes forward with the courage and ability to articulate our concerns aggressively as if he really believes what he is saying. One can only hope!

Today’s rule still requires religious institutions (on pain of ruinous treasury fines) to purchase insurance that covers these same objectionable services. It is irrelevant that the rule requires the insurance company (rather than the religious institution) to explain to employees that the policy purchased for them by their employer includes the 5 day pill. For institutions that self-insure, the situation is even worse; they will be forced to contact their employees and pay for such services themselves. It is no answer to suggest that the religious liberty of such employers is being accommodated because they are not “paying” for the objectionable service. First it is naïve to imagine that the services are truly cost-free and that these costs will not be passed along to the employers who purchase these plans. More importantly, the simple fact is that under this policy the government is coercing religious institutions to purchase a product that includes services that they regard as gravely immoral.

Navy Music Year in Review

Money spent for the Navy Music Program is a wise investment. I served in Navy Bands for 26 years and performed all over the world. I've seen Navy bands break up anti-american demonstrations more than once, inspire patriotism among troops serving in difficult circumstances, and spread goodwill worldwide to countless millions via the "universal language" of music. Military musicians are a special group of patriotic people with musical talent who develop their skills for the most part before entering the service. In most cases they forego professional performing and/or teaching careers to represent the Navy and their country proudly on both land and sea. It would be very unwise to cut their budgets severely as some in Congress have suggested as their overall budget is a drop in the bucket compared to the billions being wasted in other areas of the Defense budget. Contact your congressional representatives and tell them not to cut Military Music Programs. They perform a great service for this nation.

Obama Takes on the Catholic Church and the Constitution

I am an evangelical Christian who feels a bond with all true believers in the death, burial, and resurection of Jesus Christ regardless of their denomination or differences in theology as long as we agree once again that Jesus Christ died for our sins, was buried and rose on the third day by the power of the Holy Spirit.

I am also a conservative Republican and strict constitutionalist who couldn't agree more with the words of Pope Benedict the XVI who stated: Wherever politics tries to be redemptive it is promising too much. Where it wishes to do the word of God, it becomes not devine but demonic.

All efforts to create a utopian society down through History based on fairness and equality have never resulted in anything more than "misery" except for the ruling class and tyranny for everyone else. And one of the first things to appear in a Socialist state is national healthcare, characterized by mediocrity,  as a means to control the masses and the disapperance of all vestiges of true Christianity and all persons deemed enemies of the State.

Most Catholics, evangelical christians, and constitutionalists are appalled at the Obama Administration's decision to go to war against the Catholic Church and all those who believe in the Free Exercise clause of the US Constitution found in the First Amendment which clearly states: Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.

The framers obviously felt that the protections of religious liberty against an overabusive government was more important than any of the rights we have because the right to follow the revealed Will of God in  his Holy Word is not an option for those who fear God and wish to lead a life that is pleasing to him. In fact that right does not come from government but from God alone, along with the unalienable rights mentioned in the Declaration of Independence which says: We hold these truths to be self evident that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator  with certain unalienable rights that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness.


Now the Tyrant in Chief, President Obama, feels empowered to command Religious institutions what they can and cannot do, as delineated in this unprecidented and very courageous letter from the Bishop of Marquette, The Right Honorable Alexander K Sample

I write to you concerning an alarming and serious matter that negatively impacts the Church in the United States directly, and that strikes at the fundamental right to religious liberty for all citizens of any faith. The federal government, which claims to be "of, by, and for the people," has just been dealt a heavy blow to almost a quarter of those people -- the Catholic population -- and to the millions more who are served by the Catholic faithful.
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services announced last week that almost all employers, including Catholic employers, will be forced to offer their employees' health coverage that includes sterilization, abortion-inducing drugs, and contraception. Almost all health insurers will be forced to include those "services" in the health policies they write. And almost all individuals will be forced to buy that coverage as a part of their policies.
In so ruling, the Obama Administration has cast aside the First Amendment to the Constitution of the United States, denying to Catholics our Nation's first and most fundamental freedom, that of religious liberty. And as a result, unless the rule is overturned, we Catholics will be compelled to either violate our consciences, or to drop health coverage for our employees (and suffer the penalties for doing so). The Obama Administration's sole concession was to give our institutions one year to comply.
We cannot--we will not--comply with this unjust law. People of faith cannot be made second class citizens. We are already joined by our brothers and sisters of all faiths and many others of good will in this important effort to regain our religious freedom. Our parents and grandparents did not come to these shores to help build America's cities and towns, its infrastructure and institutions, its enterprise and culture, only to have their posterity stripped of their God given rights. In generations past, the Church has always been able to count on the faithful to stand up and protect her sacred rights and duties. I hope and trust she can count on this generation of Catholics to do the same. Our children and grandchildren deserve nothing less.
And therefore, I would ask of you two things. First, as a community of faith we must commit ourselves to prayer and fasting that wisdom and justice may prevail, and religious liberty may be restored. Without God, we can do nothing; with God, nothing is impossible. Who would have ever thought that this could happen in the United States of America.

This is clearly a courageous servant of his faith and deserves the support of all those who believe in the protections of Religious liberty even if they disagree with some of the teachings and decrees of their own denomination. The framers of the US Constitution believed this protection against the type of totaltarian regime they successfuly revolted against in England was of paramount importance if we were to remain "one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all"

I suppose we should be thankful that after spending the last 60 years parroting the communist mantra of “social equality”, “social justice” and a variety of other pious-sounding “social” bloviations and then spoon-feeding them to their flock, the Catholic Church’s hierarchy has just been served a giant wake-up call via the Communist Manifesto for eliminating faith, family, God and the Church.

Perhaps we should be grateful for the few bishops who have finally grown a spine. Still, many other men of the cloth silently sat around at the recent Prayer Breakfast and listened as the Big Zero channeled Jesus Christ by telling them that Jesus would approve of his tax policy!

Everyone knows that in the King Obama version of the Bible, Jesus’ teachings require that the people give all their money to Caesar so that Caesar can then redistribute it to his friends. Too bad nobody thought to ask His Highness if Jesus would approve of his abortion-on-demand policy.

Does anyone think Caesar… er, Obama gives a hoot what Jesus thinks about him and “Marie Michelle Antoinette” living large on the taxpayer’s dime while the taxpayers are losing jobs and homes, and making choices between keeping their families fed and keeping them warm? 

Obama’s attack against the Catholic Church has nothing to do with providing health care to anybody. It’s about destroying the Constitution by way of the destruction of the Church via the destruction of freedom of religion. Read your history. Once Europeans lost their freedom to worship, it was over. The Nazis closed all of the churches, eventually replacing the altar with a picture of Hitler.

Talking heads are already dropping the word “Nazi” to describe the tactics being applied by the Obama administration, and it’s about time, too. The comparison needs to be made. The Social Democratic Worker’s Party of Germany which became the National Socialist German Worker’s Party made the eradication of religious freedom a template of their agenda.

If you’re a Catholic, consider yourself very fortunate that Pope Benedict XVI, who did remember history, realized what the progressive agenda was about, and stated some time ago: “Wherever politics tries to be redemptive it is promising too much. Where it wishes to do the work of God, it becomes not divine but demonic.” That’s a very valuable straight-forward statement, and we all need to remember it. Write it down and read it daily.

To the consternation of socialist devils everywhere, (including many self-proclaimed “Catholics” in the media), the following letter was read to most Catholics in most of the Catholic Churches across the nation:

This letter was a line drawn in the sand, and long overdue, I might add. It not only served as a bucket of cold water over the heads of those who are only beginning to understand the level of communist infiltration into the Catholic Churches and Seminaries over many decades, but bravely revealed the true identity and agenda of the Obama administration - the Petri-dish of his new Marxist/communist/fascist America.

What did 54% of mind-numbed Catholics expect when they voted for Barack Obama? Hope? Hardly! The real tragedy behind the election of Obama is that his voters were neither taught history in school, nor were they ever taught about the greatness of a nation under God. The rest of the mind-numbed Obamanots (or communists) who’ve moved on down the cafeteria cue, picking and choosing their doctrine all while refusing to remove the “I’m a Catholic” sticker from their lapels have finally hit the wall. It couldn’t have happened at a better time.

Not satisfied with violating the 1^st Amendment, Obamanots in the Pentagon went on to bully Catholic Chaplains in the military. Forbidden from reading the Bishop’s communication at Sunday Mass because army officials viewed it as “seditious”, many Catholic Chaplains thankfully disobeyed orders and read it anyway.

Who didn’t know this was coming? Instead of replacing Clintonites in the State Department and the Pentagon with conservatives when he took over the White House, George Bush just… er… thought… er, well he was for that thing… that “compassionate conservative” thing.  Look, when Republicans decide that conservatism is some kind of pejorative you have to add an adjective to in order to make it palatable, they’ve rendered themselves useless. 

Religion is under attack, folks. People who believe in the Judeo-Christian values of this nation are now being openly targeted.  Here’s the state meddling in religion. Who runs the “state”?
Nancy Pelosi (Democrat) spoke of the need for Catholic Churches to help Obama’s agenda on immigration by speaking on it “from the pulpit”. Now she says Catholics should support Obama and ignore the Bishop’s letter. Nancy Pelosi (Democrat) has taken it upon herself to redefine Catholicism into a religion that believes that God does not create rights – government does! Her “god” is the government! Democrats’ constant whining over the fictitious “separation clause” never applies when it’s they who are doing the bullying. Nan’s a Democrat, by the way.

It’s been pretty well-known for quite some time that the Democrat Party was being infiltrated with Marxist/communists. (Note: If Democrats are still retailing excuses that they have to vote Democrat because Dad, Mom, Nana, Grandpa, Uncle Billy, Fido, etc. voted Democrat to save jobs, then they haven’t woken up yet. There’s no time left to save them. They’re going down with the ship, so you’d better save yourselves.)
Republicans should take notice of this well-written return of fire from the Catholic Church, and consider manning up to the challenge themselves. I suggest they ally themselves with Catholics right quick and begin fighting this battle on both the political and religious fronts, or we’re all toast.

We could be on the precipice of either another Great Awakening, or Armageddon. If you haven’t read the ten planks of the Communist Manifesto, better do it now. This is your last stand against communism.
In 1948, six-time socialist party presidential candidate, Norman Thomas (1884-1968), gave an interview in which he stated: “The American people will never knowingly adopt socialism. But under the name of ‘liberalism’, they will adopt every fragment of the socialist program until one day America will be a socialist nation, without knowing how it happened”.

Here’s a pretty good guess how it happened. One Party morphed into Norman’s Party while the other abdicated its responsibility to the Constitution. From the “progressivism” of Teddy Roosevelt right up to the “one-world order” condoned by senior Bush and promoted by junior Bush.
Americans, thirsting for a return to adult occupation of the White House, put all of their faith and hope into an establishment Republican. “Bush II” (and this really breaks my heart) campaigned on smaller government, and then wasted the priceless commodity of a Republican presidency, with Republican majorities in both Houses of Congress, in the expansion of government along with an endless Middle East conflict for which victory (as defined by World Wars I & II) was never intended. (“…Where it wishes to do the work of God, it becomes not divine but demonic…”)

We presently stand at the edge of this cliff, not because we planned it, but because our Republican leaders who could’ve served as roadblocks to this have been AWOL for decades. We have the government we deserve because Republicans who were elected on promises they never intended to keep, refused to get in the game in order to stop the Left’s planned piece-meal destruction of America. After the real Democrat Party was over, Republicans were the only warriors left on the battlefield, so they all voted to lie down and play dead.

Thank you, Republican establishment, for giving us decades of mealy-mouthed candidates for Congress and for POTUS whose main objective was not saving the nation from enemies within but seeking the approval of a leftist media that now has no qualms about openly promoting socialism and communism because they’ve never been challenged on it.

Thank you, Republican establishment, for ignoring the campaign promises made by your establishment heroes to eliminate the Department of Education and other such anti-constitutional departments of waste and fraud built on models of communism, and therefore making the cowardly decision to allow generations of Americans to be denied a quality American education.

Thank you for allowing generations of Americans to be spoon-fed Marxist/communist ideology from Kindergarten to University. Perhaps you should have been reviewing the ten planks of The Communist Manifesto instead of toasting your way through the halls of the Good ol’ Boys’ Club of Political Self-Aggrandizement.

Thank you for all your promises to bring spending under control, and then sitting around like potted plants in the halls of Congress while “debt ceilings” were raised to unconscionable (and unpayable) levels, all while voting for an even bigger government aided by even more unelected bureaucrats all at the expense of the American people’s liberty and freedom.

Thank you, Republican establishment, for giving us presidents like George Bush I who helped promote the U.N.’s agenda for global dictatorship which has brought us a nightmare of environmental mandates that continue to destroy us both socially and economically.

Thank you for presidential candidates like Bob Dole and John McCain (Bland A and Bland B) who wouldn’t utter a single criticism against their Marxist/socialist opponents, all while Democrats, who were dead serious about “fundamentally changing” America were putting up candidates capable of lying their way into the hearts of uneducated Americans with the help of a main stream media you’re still courting!

Thank you, Republican establishment, for going after all Republican presidential candidates (whose name is not Mitt) with a vengeance you’d never dream of utilizing against Barack Obama. And thank you for making sure that your preferred candidate steers clear of letting potential voters in on any specific “cuts” he’ll sign onto once elected. We wouldn’t want him to have to fight for us in a coherent straightforward manner that uneducated Americans might understand without wondering if the guy’s not just a pompous, out-of-touch rich guy.

Whew! It’s a good thing Obama and his media goons won’t be going after Mitt on those charges! Thank God the Republican establishment will be there to make sure he doesn’t have to do anything but look pressed and coifed during the insertion and removal of feet from his mouth.
The Bishop of Marquette could teach Republicans something about bravery. Better put him on speed-dial.

Giselousy: Gisele Bundchen defends her man and Patriot Fans are outraged.

What's going on with all the press coverage Gisele Bundchen is getting over her response to a roudy Giants' fan following the Patriots' heartbreaking loss at SuperBowl XLVI. A camera for a gossip website, "the Insider" caught her replying to the moron who yelled "Eli owns your husband".

I think the story should be more about uncivil behavior by out of control fans, rather than her response. The fact that she used the "f" word is prompting some of the publicity but most of the criticism is directed at the way she lashed out at the Patriot receivers, which strikes me as nothing more than a beautiful woman defending her man. If all of us could only be so lucky...

How many women defend their husbands when they feel he’s been mistreated by one of his colleagues, co-workers, or employers. Oh I’d say that most do, but very few have the misfortune of having a camera or microphone close by whenever they leave their home as the famous Supermodel and her glamorous football sports idol  husband, Tom Brady does.

She should keep her big mouth shut you say?. Okay, fair enough, but do you feel the same way about Rosie O’Donnel or any other fat person named Rosie. Probably not. Could we be talking about a bad case of Giselousy when it comes to the vicious remarks I've been hearing from women on Sports talk radio shows in Boston the last couple of days?

I actually think she does a pretty good job ignoring the paparazzi most of the time, based on a famous You Tube video of her and Tom silently walking past phographers camped outside her apartment. They totally ignored them, without saying a peep, and looked pleasant while doing so, not mean and unfriendly in the least. And they have to deal with that every day. 

The incident in question following the Superbowl occurred without her knowledge that a camera and microphone from “The Insider”, a gossip website, were standing by and you actually have to listen carefully to decipher what she said. She was clearly talking to those in her immediate vicinity in a gut check reaction to the imbecile in the hallway.

The hatred and hostility presently being hurled towards the Celebrity couple is confusing, at best, and makes me ashamed of  the kind of football fans who follow the game on a much more intense emotional level than a casual TV audience member who watched the SuperBowl Sunday for the sheer enjoyment of watching the magnificent spectacle it clearly was.  

I didn’t understand the venom directed at Brady or Bellechick by anyone other than Patriot fans before the game, calling him “pretty boy” and "Belecheat". And I really don’t understand the level of hostility aimed at the Patriots or Brady now. No one who follows football closely like I do, ever thought that the Patriots would make it to the SuperBowl this year with the worst Defense in the league. But they did, all be it by the skin of their teeth against Baltimore, and came within one play of winning the whole ball of wax Sunday which was an unbelievable accomplishment. With the talented players that the New York Giants had, they should have won that game in more convincing fashion, although that pass to Maningham at the end, was pretty convincing,  but no one is saying that today, as the confetti flies in New York.

No, today everyone is praising the Giants and lashing out at the Patriots including poor Giselle, who was only looking for her husband at the time and not for an opportunity to make headlines.

As the saying goes: The media makes you, and the media breaks you. I just listened to Rush Limbaugh say that the general public thinks they know celebrity figures but they don't They are merely creations of the media and the media can change the image they created at the drop of a hat. 

But getting back to Sports and hero worship. You'll never hear me say the following words.... Oh well…it’s just a game, because we all know it’s not, atleast not for diehard Patriots fans and the millions who are watching the ticker tape parade in New York today and that’s the problem. Why is it a problem you say? Hint: Definition of the Biblical sin of Idolatry. A deity other than God. Any person or thing devotedly or excessively admired.

Remember the Ten Commandments: Thou shall have no other Gods before me. 

In other words Idols are anything that take the place of God in your life. We were all created to have fellowship with God spiritualy and until you accept the fact and believe that Christ died for your sins, was buried, and rose from the dead, there will be a vacumn in your life  which you’ll attempt to fill with other things like professional sports teams, work, money, material goods and even your family. Yes I know that  doesn't sound right, but even your family can be an idol if it means more to you than God does.


In Western  Europe before Christianity wiped out idolatry in Rome, Greece, and places ruled by Barbaric tribes, people sometimes had little statues in their home that made them feel good or rock formations like the totem poles found in Native America culture. Maybe that's what Stonehenge was? Who knows.


Today Americans have 72 in flat screen TVs mounted on the wall in their living rooms. Take someone's TV away from them, and see how good it makes them feel. 


And that is my point. There is one test to see if you worship sports in a way that could be classified as idolatry. How do you feel if your team loses the great Championship in that sport, when you were convinced they would? Do you lash out at the players and their wives, especially if they’re beautiful, Brazillian Supermodels? Do you stay in bed for three days? Do you feel lonely and depressed and treat the players on your team as though they committed some crime against you and your family personally? If that's the way you reacted to the New England Patriots losing the SuperBowl Sunday then might I suggest that it's time to take a walk and get things in perspective.

Imagine...who do they think they are?....serving Thanksgiving dinner to the homeless and destitue. (ha ha) The waitress in the grey blouse by the way is Gisele.

Patriot fans over 60 have "Giant" roots

Did you realize that most  Patriot fans in New England over the age of 60 like myself grew up as New York Giants fans?. The reason is simple.We had no choice as there was no NFL foot ball team in New England before 1960. And it took many years before the Boston Patriots/New England Patriots gained enough respect with local football fans to cause them to switch their loyalties. In fact it wasn't until the New York Jets defeated the Baltimore Colts in SuperBowl III that NFL fans began looking at the American Football League with enough respect to accept a merger between the two leagues.

Giants' broadcasts were still available during the early Patriot years and even beyond due to mandatory blackouts, so I really wasn't aware of what was going on with Billy Sullivan's team up at Fenway Park, except that the city of Boston wasn't very accomodating in helping them find a permanent home.

For those who came of age watching Giants' football in the late 1950's and early 1960's, every Sunday was spent watching the Giants on a small black and white TV set and listening to the crisp play by play and soothing voice of Chris Schenkel who was the voice of the New York Football Giants from 1952-1965 long before he became famous for his broadcasting of bowling and college football games. As a football broadcaster back then, he had no equals.

When I played football in the backyard or out at Buttonwood Park in New Bedford, MA with my friends I would pretend I was YA tittle or Frank Gifford, whose poster I had tacked to my bedroom wall for years. Others pretended they were Johnny Unitas or Raymond Berry of the Baltimore Colts, who had become the chief rivals of the New York Giants made famous in "the Greatest Game Ever Played" that was broadcast nationally from a very muddy Yankee Stadium in 1958.

I still remember being mesmerized by the infamous Giants' defense featuring middle linebacker Sam Huff and a dominating front four of Rosey Grier, Andy Robustelli, Jim Katcavage and Dick Modzelewski. The unit was coached by a man named Tom Landry, who later became the head coach of the expansion Dallas Cowboys. His counterpart on Offense was someone name vince Lombardi, who departed for Green Bay eventually with a working knowledge of New York's defense, while he personally supervised the Packer's offense, which of couse was the old Giants' offense.

 It never occurred to me at the time that the obscure American League Football team that was tearing up the grass at beautiful Fenway Park in Boston, MA would someday compete against the New York Giants in an NFL Championship game called the SuperBowl for a trophy that would be named after one of the Giants coaches. Other names that stand out in my mind were Alex Webster, Roosevelt Brown, Joe Morrison, Charlie Conerly, Del Shafner, Dick Lynch, Don Chandler, Pat Summerall, and head coach Alie Sherman.

The city of Boston refused to help the Patriots find a stadium so they moved to Foxboro. But even after the move it was still easier to watch the  Giants on TV than the home team because Patriots games were most always blacked out  because they could never fill Shaeffer Statdium in Foxboro. A lot of fans continued following the Giants, but most began following the Patriots at the games it self or on radio.

My father went to the very first game at the old Shaeffer Stadium while I was in the Navy and wrote me about unfinished toilets and old two lane highways backed up all the way to Boston

I still don't think the Patriots should have a thing to do with the City of Boston for the way they treated the organization. However I'm sure after the Patriots win the Superbowl this year (I hope) they will have their victory parade in Boston as always.

When I first saw the Giant’s play in the modern era I was struck  by the fact their blue or red and white uniforms didn’t look anything like they did on black and white TV..

But nostalgia only goes so far as most of us who lived through that era are Patriots fans to the core now, with a few exceptions.

Now there is nothing more I want to see than the Patriots get some revenge Sunday for what the Giants did to us in 2007 and I'm confident they will. I fully expect the Patriots to confuse them with their hurry up offense and surprise the Giants with a running game. We know they have that in their arsenal and it's interesting that neither the Giants nor the sports pundits on the airwaves  seem to be to concerned with that.

Furthermore I don't think the Giants rush is as effective against the run as it is in getting to the quaterback, especially when the opponents offensive line is suspect due to injuries as it was the last time they played each other. Running plays will force the Giants to bring some of those defensive backs in and allow them to get some receivers open as well.  

There is no question that the Giants are playing great right now since they have been getting healthier, but so have the Pats on both sides of the ball. If you're going to judge the Patriots based on their earlier season loss to the Giants, you're making a big mistake. They have won 10 games in a row since then and last week the Patriots proved that Brady doesn't have to have a big day in order to win, and Baltimore's defense was far superior to the Giants'. The Patriots special teams are also due to display some unexpected heroics as well. Remember this is a team that practices situational football constantly and they'll be ready this time as the game runs down. I just read where the Patriots even practiced their half-time routine which will be very long while Madonna is putting on her show. Now that's what I call attention to detail. .

I haven't been able to watch the Super Bowl when the Giants stole the game right from under our noses in the last seconds until this week. I had forgotten how close the Patriots were to finishing out a perfect 19-0 season. Assante Samuel missed an interception right at the end which would have sealed the victory for them. And Eli Manning should have never been allowed to slip away from Rodney Harrison before throwing the miraculous helmet pass. And how did Elis Hobbs allow Plaxico Burres to get so open with the game on the line like that?

Oh well....its time for a little payback this Sunday folks. A win will mean so much to Robert Kraft after enduring this emotionally draining season that saw his wife pass away just before the start of training camp. A victory will also seal Bellechick's and Tom Brady's legacy for good. I can't speak for everybody in New England that followed football before 1960, but I know that no matter how happy the New England Patriots make me feel this Sunday and in the future, I will always have fond memories of YA Tittle and those great New York Giant teams of the past. However when I look out on the field this Sunday during Superbowl XLVI, the only thing I'll be hoping and cheering for is a resounding Patriots victory, that will help all of the Patriots and all of New England put some closure to SuperBowl XLII..  After all what's there to worry about? It's not like these are the 1958 New York Giants. Go Pats!
